Guilds of Ravnica: Szadek, vampire lord of House Dimir

With the recent release of the Magic: the Gathering’s Guilds of Ravnica expansion, the secretive guild House Dimir has gained a spotlight.

While players know the shapeshifter Lazav currently leads the guild in the Guilds of Ravnica storyline, House Dimir’s previous leader was the vampire Szadek.

Known as the Lord of Secrets, Szadek was the founder of House Dimir and worked behind the scenes in order to seize control of Ravnica. After his attack on the Decamillennial ceremony, Szadek was arrested by Agrus Kos. He was killed by Augustin IV, who enslaved his spirit.

As a spirit, Szadek killed his captor and controlled the spirits of the dead – and partially fulfilled his plan by taking over the Agyrem district, which had fused with the rest of Ravnica and later vanished. His presence is still felt as Lazav claims he heard the voice of Szadek to rebuild House Dimir.

While Magic: the Gathering does not have a spirit card for Szadekv – Wizards of the Coast may release one in the Guilds of Ravnica block – players can utilize card Szadek, Lord of Secrets, a legendary creature requiring seven mana to summon – two black, two blue and three more colors.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets has the flying ability. If Szadek, Lord of Secrets deals combat damage to a player, the damage is negated and the controller puts that many +1/+1 counters on Szadek. The target player puts that many cards from the top of their library into their graveyard.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets is not necessarily a card players want to use if they prefer to deal damage and control creatures. However, players will want to use it if their strategy is to drain their opponents’ card library to win.

Players should include cards that will be keep Szadek, Lord of Secrets on the field and block it from creatures and spells.

Szadek is not the only vampire aligned with House Dimir. The guild frequently utilizes the abilities of vampires and even has a couple of high ranking members like Mirko Vosk and Etrata the Silencer.
